Born in 1936 and living in Shelby,NC, I probably heard him first on the opry which we listened to every Sat nite. Also remembering seeing him at the Carolina theater with Bill(possibly his first hometown appearance)as a member of his band. As Earl states there were a number of three finger banjo pickers and one of the best was Lloyd McGraw who played a couple of times with Bill at the opry but turned down the opportunity to return home. He and my dad, Walt, played locally.
