Snuffy died in 1990 of complications from colon cancer. I hate to debate on who started what because sometimes people take too much to heart and get angry and, therefore, the webmaster deletes the notes, similar to what I think happened with Snuffy's daughter-in-law's message. There were many who played three-finger going back to the 1800s. Snuffy was the first to broadcast over the radio a three-finger style with picks on his fingers. As Wade Mainer said, Snuffy had his problems with timing...I believe he was trying to get bluegrass time while everyone else was on jug music timing. Earl and Don may have started at the same time. Earl was probably the first who smoothed it out into a style all his own. Don possessed more of Snuffy's style, while, at the same time, added the single-string and jazzed-up chording. No matter who was first, what is enjoyed in bluegrass is Scrugg's style, which is one of a hundred different ways to play the banjo. I hope that no one's feelings have been hurt...if so, I apologize in advance.
