Growing up, Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass was my alarm clock! 5:45 a.m. on WSM-AM, Monday thru Friday. My parents, sisters and I had many a breakfast listening to TRUE bluegrass. Even now, I love the Nick at nite's rerun of the Beverly Hillbillies with Lester and Earl appearing. Mr. Monroe, in a category all his own. These are the pioneers of bluegrass. The are the ones who paved the way for Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill and other "modern" stars who STILL love singing bluegrass. Nickel Creek? In its way, yes, an extension of bluegrass. Flatt & Scruggs' music once was described as "folk music in overdrive", and I believe NC's music fits that mode more than the "traditional" bluegrass sound. I am thrilled to see younger artists with a desire for pure country as Nickel Creek, "pure", NOT the southern rock of the 1970s.
So, is Nickel Creek, in the broad term, bluegrass? Sure. In the traditional, lonesome sound of Ralph Stanley, Jim & Jesse McReynolds and others? I hope one day they will be!
